It seems like Pharrell never stops working. Not that that's a bad thing, but I'm starting to feel spoiled.
Pharrell's been working with a new artist, Big Sean, who signed to G.O.O.D. Music (of no affiliation with GoodMusicOrBust...it's John Legend and them, which means he'll probably be working with Kanye 'Hype Ass' West as well) in 2007, then Island Def Jam earlier this year.
Here's the beginnings of a track he's working on with Pharrell.
Big Sean feat. Pharrell - Confused
(Just an instrumental, but very smooth)
And here's one of his older mixtape tracks so you can get a feel for his flow.
Big Sean - We Known
(Kanye-ish, I know, but I dig it.)
See, this is what happens when you leave us Kelis. Imposters come along, ready and willing to take advantage of the songs I'm sure were intended for you. This chick Muffy has been on the scene for a little while now, but I wasn't feeling her other songs so I gave her a pass. But this song right here, produced by the infamous Bangladesh, is starting to grow on me.
Muffy - Dope Boy
All I have to say is I love you Kelis...but come back while you still have the chance.
Really Kanye?
So blogger def deleted my welcome back post. Apparently Kanye's being a hype ass over the songs that leaked from 808s and Heartbreak, and his people snitched on me. Yea I reposted the songs after they took em down the first time, but wtf...if yal don't get the songs from me, your just gonna get them somewhere else anyway.
I'm not gonna put hype ass's songs back up because I'm tired of blogger deleting my hard work. I'm just going to apologize one more time for my hiatus, and proceed to bring you hot fire.
I usually don't do this but...
you guys deserve it.
Q-Tip's new album, The Renaissance, comes out on Election Day (Nov. 4th), but of course it leaked last week. While I still strongly encourage that you all go out and actually buy good hip hop when it's released...here's your chance to enjoy it early.
Q-Tip - The Renaissance
The annual CMJ (College Music Journal) Music Festival was held last week, which meant I got to go see an unlimited amount of bands on my radio station's dime.
Since school and I aren't friends right now, I wasn't going to go until Friday night, but I looked at the set list for Thursday and JANELLE MONAE and CHESTER FRENCH were playing at the Bowery Ballroom...aka F*CK responsibilities.
Since I'm cool, I got to hang out with all of them after the show...but we'll talk about that another day. The moral of this post is the band I "accidentally" saw before Janelle went on.
Company of Thieves is one of those rare CMJ Festival finds that I'm sure is going to blow up very soon. They put on a crazy live show, and even though I never heard of them, I was instantly hooked.
This is one of the songs they performed Thursday night that made me actually buy their CD.
Company of Thieves - Under the Umbrella
Shout out to the lead singer Genevieve for giving me a discount! lol
I can't...
College is kicking my ass right now, and THIS is the current soundtrack of my life. I will be on hiatus for a few more days, but as always...I promise I'll come back with hot fire.
I like telling jokes. My friend Elijah (the nice blue gentleman on the right) likes telling jokes. So I invited him to tell some jokes over here.
This post is courtesy of a Facebook note Brother E wrote that made me laugh.....and cry.
Hopefully this will become a weekly treat...
Top 5 Worst Kid Games Ever.
Now I know yall remember the classic days of the 90's. I wish I can go back because 2k has sucked so far, except of the invention of YouTube, the stress reliever. I did my research and placed 5 of the worst games known to man in the 90's. There are plenty more but, here are my top 5.
5. "Crossfire" - I really dont know how to explain this, its like air hockey, meets pinball meets something else. All I know is...This commercial is false advertising like crazy. I once played this game, and excuse my french, but this sh*t is boring.
Crossfire Commercial < You can have it.
4. "Don't Wake Daddy" - Try to get to the kitchen and dont wake dad....Black kids had to go through that mess in real life, i dont want to play a game symbolizing it. lol.
Don't Wake Daddy Commercial < Peep game.
3. "Perfection" - Put the pieces into the slot....make the right selection...you know the rest. But this commercial was disturbing with the bright colors and the man with the booty chin. Lil creepy.
Perfection Commercial < Commercial time!
2. "Elefun" - An elephant sneezing out butterflies and you have to catch them in a net........BOOOOOOOO!
Elefun Commercial < Reminisce on this wack game.
1. "Mr. Bucket" - The objective of the game is to place the balls in the bucket, but be careful, he will spit your balls out of his mouth! (Michael Jackson must have played this with the boys when he had his sleepover, HIIIIIIIYOOOOOOO!!!!)
Mr. Bucket Commercial < Watch.
I hope that I didn't make your day/evening miserable, this was supposed to make you laugh. And if you have the Mr. Bucket game song in your head, don't blame me, blame my brother, he found it. lol. HOLLA!
Throwback Style
Somehow I missed this when it first came out, and if you did too...here's the video for N.E.R.D.'s "Provider" off of their 1st studio album, In Search Of...
Common and N.E.R.D. will be performing at the Roseland Ballroom tomorrow night on their Invicible Sounds of Summer Tour. Hopefully I'll be there :/
"The Hills" is my #1 Guilty Pleasure
Everything stops on Monday nights at 10 PM. "The Hills" comes on, and me and my girls are in a zone.
Judge me if you want.
And even though I could front and say it's to discover the hot new music they premiere, I won't...but that is actually my point for this particular post. About 2 weeks ago, a band called The White Tie Affair performed at a showcase that was featured on "The Hills," and I've been feelin' this song ever since.
Just listen...trust me, it's hot.
The White Tie Affair - Allow Me to Introduce Myself...Mr. Right
Old school does it best.
A track list has been released for Q-Tip's forthcoming album The Renaissance, which is scheduled to hit stores November 4th. (So go out and vote, then cop his album :).
Here's a pre-released track that's scheduled to appear on Tip's new CD.
Q-Tip feat. D'Angelo - Believe
The Renaissance will also have guest appearances from Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, J Dilla, Norah Jones, Madlib, Common, Raphael Saadiq & Santogold.
I'm in love.
And if you're a big Q-Tip fan, he's previewing his entire new album tonite at the Knitting Factory in NYC for FREE if you RSVP by texting QTIP to 66937. It's limited entry ONLY so arrive early! Best believe I'll be in there! Thanks Brother E :)
...And if you're wondering where the track list is at...look a little closer at the album cover.
"Yal betta shut up!"
FINALLY, a music video from our favorite cybergirl, Janelle Monae! "Many Moons" debuted yesterday on 106 & Park (which I think was Black Embarassment TV's way of tricking me to watch) and Janelle Monae even stopped by to introduce herself to the mainstream world. Rocsi dumb ass couldn't even pronounce her damn name right. I hate that show.
But back to Jane...she introduced the video as a short film, and that's definitely what it is. The video is even better than I could have ever expected, but then again, Ms. Monae rarely dissapoints.
Watch!
And I'm so sorry it cuts off a little at the end, every version I could find on these internets does. I promise I'll update this post when a better version is released.
*Update*
Here's a behind the scenes video I found of the making of "Many Moons."
Let the remixes begin!
Another rapper tests out his vocals over Kanye's "Love Lockdown." But this isn't your average cover.
NYC (by way of VA) rapper Tonedeff mixed one of his own songs called "Warden" over a beefed up version of the "Love Lockdown" beat. Please don't sleep on this remix just because you don't know the name. It's crazy, and the remix of the remix is even crazier so check em both out.
Tonedeff - Warden (Love Lockdown RMX)
Tonedeff - Warden (Love Lockdown Chu Fu House RMX)
U like?
I'm trying out new layouts for goodmusicorbust. I hope u find this one as fly as I do...
I got class in about 10 minutes, but I promise, tonight...more goodmusic.
O YEAH...and i got an EXCLUSIVE interview, with an up and coming "artist." Look out for it by this weekend.
*UPDATE on Interview* (9.28.08)
So the CD drive on my laptop is actin up, so I haven't edited the interview yet. I def plan on doing it this week though. Trust me...it's worth the wait.
get it while you can.
If you follow Lupe at all, you know we've been waiting....and waiting....
and waiting...
.....and waiting for this remix. AND HERE IT IS! The remix to my favorite track off of The Cool, "Paris, Tokyo." And I swear, Lupe gets on my nerves sometimes. He makes it so hard to be a fan, releasing 1 song per 8 years. I still love him though and this remix does not disappoint....so check it out!
Lupe Fiasco feat. Pharrell, Q-Tip, and Sarah Green - Paris, Tokyo (Remix)
So pause. I don't know if artists can have their people delete entire blog posts, but apparently that's what's been happening around here. Well guess what? I'll just post it again. Sh*t, at least ask before you mess with my stuff...
And now that I think about it, they deleted my Nas post from a while back too. I thought I was just goin' thru it...
Anyway, I still love this song, even though they won't let me keep it up here. So you know what, word to the wise...get it while you can.
My favs whether they let me post their music or not :/
John Legend feat. Kanye West and Pharrell - It's Over
Guilty Pleasure #2
Yea yea yea, it's been a week. Sorry. Moving on...
This sh*t right here? This is what I expected from Keri Hilson when she finally went mainstream. "Energy" just didn't do it for me.
I'm considering this a Guilty Pleasure because it has that generic back n forth with Timbaland steelo goin' on, but the beat is crazy...so I'll give it a pass.
Keri Hilson feat. Timbaland - Return the Favor
The day after I posted his new video, Common went and changed the name of his forthcoming LP from Invincible Summer to Universal Mind Control...probably because the Summer is nice and gone.
The CD is now expected to come out sometime in November, and in case you didn't know, the whole thing will be produced by The Neptunes :)
In anticipation, check out this live performance of Common and Pharrell performing a track from the album called, "Gladiator."
Sorry I keep you guys waiting a few days sometimes, but I'm a busy girl. And besides, it makes me feel obligated to come back even harder when I take a few days off, so for you, that's a good thing ;)
I've been patiently waiting for a video for Common's "Universal Mind Control" (produced by The Neptunes <3) because I knew it was gonna be crazy, but all we get, for now, is this teaser. It is hot though...all 34 seconds of it. lol
Common's 8th Studio album, Invincible Summer, drops September 22.
Please hold while I continue to get my life together. Tryna be Oprah ain't easy...
So apparently the lead singer of my favorite band right now, J*DaVeY, used to work for the Ellen Degeneres Show, and Ellen let them come on to perform their latest single "Dollar or More" earlier this week. Barbara corny ass woulda never let them set foot on The View.
Great performance as usual, I just wonder how Ellen's audience members responded to the lyrics...
"Maybe I'll let you touch it, maybe I'll let you see it for a dollar or more."
lol at the shock.
My bad...
Soooo I started my junior year at Hofstra on Tuesday, so bear with me for a little bit if I'm late with the posts. But in memory of the summer, I wanted to put a band on here that's been in heavy rotation on the Zune and on my radio show (I'm on every other Wednesday -starting today- from 9-11 AM on wrhu.org. I'll give you more info later).
The Virgins released their debut, self-titled album back in June, and here's a couple of my fav tracks to hold you over until I get my life together.
Rock/R&B/Punk white boys?
Cool.
The Virgins- She's Expensive
The Virgins- Rich Girls
Throwback Style
Kenna!!
I'm anxious, but I guess this is the closest to new Kenna we're gonna get. Lupe hopped on his single from 2007 to make this remix back in May.
Check it out.
Kenna- Say Goodbye to Love RMX feat. Lupe Fiasco
New Brandy?
So I'm going to put this under the "Guilty Pleasures" category because for some reason, I don't feel comfortable saying, "I like Brandy's new songs." But as Lil' Mama would say, "she ceases to amaze me," with her signature monotonous harmonies and Rodney Jerkins produced tracks. (jokes)
Ironically neither of these tracks are a result of Darkchild Productions. The first one was produced by Polow da Don, and for the second one, Brandy teamed back up with the producer who made the "Full Moon" track on her 2002 LP, Full Moon.
Brandy- Porcelain Doll
Brandy- Throw it All Away
Brandy's 5th studio album, Human, is scheduled to hit stores November 11th...but we know how they've been pushing back album releases all crazy these days so look for it in the next couple years I guess.
Freshies: Funeral Party
I haven't posted a new Indie band in a few days, so here's a cool one. These guys have been making music together since '04, yet they still haven't gotten the exposure they deserve...but that's what I'm for :)
They'll be performing live in Brooklyn on Sept. 11th. Look them up.
Funeral Party- Where Did It Go Wrong
The Premiere of "Guilty Pleasures"
OK. So sometimes I like a good beat too. And I'm definitely not anti-mainstream, I'm just anti-bullsh*t. The radio's not ALWAYS bad...just most of the time.
Anyway, I made this category I'm calling "Guilty Pleasures," to have a venue to post songs that I'm feeling that may not be different, that may not be deep, that are nothing more than hot fire by default [i.e. putting Jay-Z, Kanye, T.I., and yes, Lil' Wayne on one track.]
With that said...
T.I.- Swagger Like Us feat. Jay-Z, Kanye West & Lil' Wayne
At least they sampled M.I.A.??
Quick vaca
Good Music: The Sol-Angel Edition
I don't want this to become a blog de la Solange...but it is my duty, as it says in the name of the blog, to bring you good music. Her new CD leaked last week, and man, I can't remember the last time I could listen to an entire CD through, from beginning to end, like seriously, EVERY SINGLE TRACK IS CRAZY. Her pen game is ridiculous. You might have to listen to a lot of the songs a few times to really get where she's coming from.
Again, I really REALLY wish she wasn't Beyonce's sister, cuz this chick could have made it on her own. Eff her last name.
I still want to encourage you to buy the CD, that's why I'm not posting the whole thing on here...but here's a few tracks that will clear any doubt in your mind that Solange is the shit.
These 2 have that 60's feel that we got from her first 2 singles.
Solange- Valentine's Day
Solange- Dancing in the Dark
You might have to blow a L to fully appreciate this one...unless your high off life like me ;)
Solange- This Bird
And this one...I swear I almost banged out on the Jersey Turnpike, I was in a zone...
Solange- Cosmic Journey feat. Bilal
Enjoy :)
1-2-3 Green Light!
John Legend finally put out a video for one of my Summer favs, Green Light. This song features Andre 3000 (random right?) and if you haven't heard it yet...prepare to be pleasantly surprised. The song is hot, and the video is pretty cute too.
John Legend- Green Light feat. Andre 3000
Even Stevie Wonder got down sometimes...
John Legend's 3rd Studio Album, Evolver Hits stores October 28.
A Midnight Marauder
Q-Tip is back!! And with the smoothest track I've heard in a while. I've always loved his flow, and this song will definitely make you feel like your in the 90's again...in a good way. It was produced by the late, great J Dilla, and if it sounds familiar...I also posted the song it samples below.
Q-Tip- Gettin' Up
I love it!
Here's the inspiration...
Black Ivory- You and I
(lol at homeboy's face in the middle thinkin he hard.)
Look out for Q-Tip's new album The Renaissance, hitting stores October 14th.
I LOVE Central Park!
I posted a couple Janelle Monae songs a few days ago, but I finally uploaded the videos from her performance at Summerstage in Central Park on 8/3/08.
I didn't really tell you why you should love her on the first post...so here's why. Make sure you listen past the feedback.
Janelle Monae- Smile
Oh yea, and she does this!
(Short, I know but this was taken after I backed away from the action lol)
I didn't think it was possible, but someone actually did. This track is featured on producer Trackademicks new mixtape, The [Re]Mixtape Vol. 2.
Pharrell- That Girl (Trackademicks RMX)
He remixed a J*DaVeY track on there too...
J*DaVeY- Valley of Love (Trackademicks RMX)
Freshies: Does it Offend You, Yeah?
No, that's actually the name of this band. That sooo would have been the name of this blog if I thought of it first :/
English-Cool...
Does it Offend You, Yeah?- Dawn of the Dead
I want one! I want a golden goose!
Not only does this dude use soundbites from one of my favorite movies ever, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, he's Erykah Badu's baby's dad...so u know he's on some other ish. Jay Electronica has been on the scene for a minute, but he is so far from mainstream, he may never see the light of day. He's from New Orleans, and in this song he walks us through someone's (maybe his) experience after Katrina.
Jay Electronica- When The Levees Broke
Hot fire.
It's not her fault she's Beyonce's little sister, sheesh.
I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS...I LIKE SOLANGE. Not quite love, not yet, but it's getting there. Yeah, the first time around she was extra wack (i.e. that little diddy she made with Lil' Romeo) but seriously...you know you love I Decided. I don't know man, she just seems so genuine and sincere to me. I'm not gonna hold her past against her. Every track that I've heard from her upcoming album has been soooo...for a lack of a better word, refreshing. This song right here is def one of my favorites right now.
Solange- T.O.N.Y.
ps. This is the song that really did it for me...
Solange- F*ck the Industry, Signed Sincerely
And here's her new video for her next single, Sandcastle Disco.
Her new album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams will hit stores August 26th. Respect her hustle.
I also tell jokes...
Virtual Insanityyy
Was I the only one who used to love this song? lol
Jamiroquai- Virtual Insanity
Basically Madonna sat down and said, "Man I just want a hit."
So she got the Neptunes and Timbaland to produce her entire new CD, Hard Candy. I can't even knock her though cuz it worked. Here's my favorite track from her new album.
Warning: It's a feel good song, don't expect it to be too deep. The beat is crazy though...let the whole song play.
Madonna- Incredible
BTW... she turned 50 a couple days ago. wtf.
Cindi Mayweather
...aka Janelle Monae. If you don't know this chick yet, you suck. j/k. But now is ur chance to step ur brain up.
Janelle Monae- Many Moons
Janelle Monae- Mr. President
Her new album, Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition) has been in stores for like 3 days now...
WHY DON'T YOU HAVE IT YET?!
Freshies: Holly Weerd...not the place, but just as crazy.
"In a search to bring back the essence of true Atlanta musicianship, Dreamer, The Love Crusader, Tuki and Stago Lee, collectively known as Hollyweerd lead you into a land where rejects and weirdos reign supreme."
-Their Myspace...lol, but really, I couldn't have said it better myself.
Here's 2 tracks off their new mixtape, Edible Phat.
Holly Weerd- Weerdo
Janelle Monae feat. Holly Weerd- Sincerely Jane RMX
New Santi White
Back to the music!
Ok so I love this crew, and I don't care if I'm late. Brook D'Leau + Jack Davey= J*DaVeY, and to me, they're like Kelis before Milkshake. They're so fresh, different, edgy (and not in a Rihanna kind of way :/ ) But like i said a moment ago, I don't like to write too much...funny because in person, I can't shut the eff up...so just listen dammit.
A couple of their newer tracks
J*DaVeY- Hi Sun
J*DaVeY- Mr. Mister
...and a older one that I love!
J*DaVeY- This One!
Another quick disclaimer...
I know a lot of "bloggers" like to talk a lot in their blogs and be all extra when it comes to describing the music they post, i.e. "It's like Fergie + Spongebob, mixed with a little Jesus." Man, I rather just let the music speak for itself. The shit is hot. Get with it or don't let the door hit u in ur asscrack.
So my friend Vonny put me on to this band. Vonny and I are both obsessed with anything Neptunes (you will learn that Pharrell has my heart). Anyway, their name is Chester French and they recently signed with Star Trak. This is pop-rock at it's finest people. Breath of fresh air is an understatement.
..Oh yeah, and these guys are two Harvard grads.
Chester French- The Jimmy Choos
Chester French- She Loves Everybody
Numero Uno...Disclaimer
So I'm going to use my first post as a disclaimer:
This is not your typical music blog. It is not devoted to any one type of music. I don't have a favorite "genre" of music, unless "good" is considered a genre. I will not post music just because it's popular (unless I feel like telling jokes that day). Don't get me wrong, if it's hot, I'm down, if not, don't get mad and ask, "Alicia, why don't you have Bow Wow's new song "Marco Polo" on here?! It's a hit!" Because no, it's not.
Basically what I'm trying to say is...if Lil' Wayne is your favorite rapper, or Ashanti's "Good Good" is your Summer '08 anthem...this is not the place for you homie.
What you will find out about me through this blog, is that I will listen to ANYTHING. What you will find out about yourself is, you've really been wasting your time listening to the radio all of your life.
Let's make moves.
